Math at Home: How to help your child with math homework
Oftentimes, math at home focuses on math. Parents try to be their child’s tutor. Sometimes this is great; however, it can lead to tension and friction when we use a different strategy or approach, or when some kids just don’t always want that type of help from us. We then transition to asking whether they’ve completed their work, whether they’ve checked their answers, and whether they have any questions.
The approach below focuses on something more effective: teaching your child to catch themselves when they make a mistake and recover from it without falling apart. This will help them complete their homework, check their answers, and answer many of their own questions.
Researchers who study high-performing math learners found that successful learners tend to monitor their own thinking before, during, and after a task. The habit is called self-regulation, and it’s a skill that can be learned.

PART 1: The 12 Questions
Here are 3 common types of questions parents ask their kids about their homework.
- Did you complete your homework?
- Did you check your work?
- Do you have any questions?
Here are other ways to ask questions to start a dialogue about homework that better support your child.
QUESTION TYPE #1
Instead of “Did you complete your homework?” ask:
- “What order did you do the questions in, and why?”
This reveals whether they used any strategy in completing their homework (did they start with what they already knew, saving the hardest for when they’re fresh) or just went top-to-bottom on autopilot. It lets them know that how you approach a task is a strategic choice with different outcomes.
2. “What’s the one problem you almost skipped?”
Kids often avoid questions they find the hardest and still say “done.” This question reveals avoidance without accusing them of it – and starts a conversation about why they almost skipped it. Knowing why they skipped it helps them pause to notice their obstacles (quitting when it feels hard, needing a quick break before going back, rushing off to tech, etc.). Recognizing the obstacle can help them find a way to overcome it.
3. “On a scale of 1 – 5, how comfortable are you with the concepts?”
While the answer can be short and direct, it also gives your child the opportunity to stop and think if maybe some questions weren’t completed, or some concepts could use a revision. A confident “done” versus an “I think, a 3” is a very different situation, and the second one opens the door to going back to the homework or to discussing why.
REASONING – “Did you complete your homework?” usually gets a yes or no response. The questions above facilitate a dialogue about the homework, in which learning strategies can be addressed.
QUESTION TYPE #2
Instead of “Did you check your work?”, ask (This works if the parent notices the errors and is aware that their child did not check their work):
4. “What is this question actually asking you to find?”
Most math mistakes happen before any math is done — the child misreads the question. This forces them to slow down at the start, not just at the end.
5. “What do you know that could help here?”
This activates prior knowledge and builds the habit of searching their own toolbox before assuming they’re stuck. (This is the single biggest difference between kids who freeze and kids who try something.)
6. “Where exactly did you get stuck?” Not “what’s wrong” —but “where.”
This teaches them to isolate the problem rather than feel globally defeated by it. A kid who can point to one step feels capable. A kid who says, “I don’t get any of it,” has given up before even starting.
7. “If you got this wrong, what’s your best guess why?”
This is the question that builds real math confidence over time. Kids who explain their own errors remember how to solve them. Kids who are just told the answer don’t.
8. “What would you do differently next time?”
This closes the loop. It’s the single sentence that turns a mistake into a strategy instead of a scar.
*The next question works if the parent doesn’t know if it’s correct or doesn’t understand the math.
9. “Walk me through how you got this answer”
The parent doesn’t need to know the solution or if it’s right — they just need to listen for hesitation, backtracking, or a step the kid skips over quickly. Kids often catch their own mistakes mid-explanation simply by being forced to say them out loud.
Engineering students are often encouraged to use the “rubber duck” technique to make their thinking explicit. This is a powerful learning strategy that also works in many fields, including learning math. The idea is simple: place a rubber duck (or any object) on your desk and explain your problem to it as if you were teaching someone who knows nothing.
REASONING – “Did you check your work?” also usually gets a yes-or-no response, and most parents can’t verify the answer themselves or always know what was assigned. The questions above don’t rely on the parent knowing the math or whether the answer is right— they build the habit of self-checking, so the child learns to catch their own errors regardless of who’s in the room.
QUESTION TYPE #3
Instead of “Do you have any questions?” ask:
10. “What’s one thing you understood better today than yesterday?”
This works because it leads the child to share their struggle and how they overcame it. Giving the child the confidence to share today’s struggles, knowing they will figure them out with time as well.
11. “IF you had to explain one of these problems to a friend, which one would you pick, and why?”
A stronger check for understanding than “Do you get it?” Explaining requires knowing, not just recognizing. If they can’t explain any of the concepts easily, that’s your real answer.
12. “What’s something that made sense while you were doing it, but you’re not sure you could do again tomorrow?”
This question targets a common trap: understanding something in the moment with help nearby but not yet being able to recall it. The concept hasn’t fully stuck. The answer gives you something concrete your child can revisit.
REASONING: “Do you have any questions?” often gets a yes-or-no response as kids can’t always determine where they’re confused. The questions above work backward from something the child does understand, which is easier to access, and often reveal the gap in understanding along the way.
PART 2: The Fridge Checklist
Before, During, and After Homework — Grades 6 – 11
BEFORE (2 minutes)
- Phone is out of sight, not just face-down (any tech that distracts).
- Ask: “On a scale of 1–5, how confident do you feel about tonight’s homework?”
- If it’s a 1 or 2, start with the easiest problem first — not the hardest. Build confidence by solving a few problems to keep the momentum going; starting with questions that are too difficult can cause avoidance.
DURING (as needed)
- If they’re stuck on one problem for more than 3–4 minutes (depending on the question’s difficulty), move on to another question and come back to it later.
- Ask one of the questions #1- #9 above instead of giving the answer or looking it up for them.
- If frustration is rising, maybe it’s time for a break. Applaud for spending an “x” amount of time, ideally about 20-25 minutes. Avoid focusing on how many questions were answered. Focusing on what’s been done and what’s left to do can overwhelm some students. It’s easier to manage with a goal of how much time is spent on the homework.
AFTER
- Ask: “What’s one problem you’re proud of tonight?”
- Ask: Any of the questions #10 – #12.
- Skip “good job” — instead, try “I noticed you didn’t give up on that one.” Specific noticing builds real confidence. Generic praise doesn’t. Also, focusing on something they did well during the problem-solving process emphasizes learning strategies and effort.
PART 3: The Script
What to Say in the First 5 Minutes of a Meltdown
Use this the next time there’s tension during homework time. The goal isn’t to fix the math in this moment — it’s to get your child back to a state where their brain can think.
Minute 1 — Name it, don’t fix it.
“This looks really frustrating right now.” (Not: “It’s not that hard.” That tells them their feeling is wrong, and now they’re fighting you and the math.)
Minute 2 — Give them an out
“Do you want to take a 5-minute break, or talk through where you got stuck?” (This gives back a small piece of control. A kid who feels controlled can feel more tension. A kid who feels a choice softens.)
Minute 3 — If they choose to keep going
“Let’s not solve it yet. Just show me the exact spot where it stopped making sense.” (This shrinks an overwhelming problem into a findable point — which is almost always less scary than the whole page.)
Minute 4 — Redirect the story they’re telling themselves
“This is the kind of problem that’s supposed to feel hard right now. That’s not a sign you’re bad at this — that’s what it feels like when you’re learning something new.” (Kids often interpret difficulty as proof they’re not “a math person.” This sentence quietly rewrites that story.)
Minute 5 — Hand it back
“What’s one small thing you could try next?” (End here. Even if the answer is small or wrong, the goal of these 5 minutes was never the math — it was proving to your kid that hard doesn’t mean broken, and stuck just means to reset.)
